Clive Constance (Treasurer)
Clive studied Economics and Politics at University, followed by a degree in Theology. Then after a Diploma in Education he taught in a grammar school for three years followed by 14 years at Hatfield Polytechnic, first lecturing in Economics and later as Dean of Students. He joined New College Durham as deputy principal and eventually retired early after another 14 years of challenges and excitement, gaining much experience in management and finance. Clive also acquired a Postgraduate Diploma in Finance and Accountancy of the ACCA. His role at New College Durham included leading the college’s bid to provide the education service in the prisons.
Throughout his life Clive has been devoted to music in his spare time. He has been Chair of Durham County Opera and Opera Nova in Darlington and has performed many solo roles, sung with Choral Societies and given song recitals. Clive is also a member of Durham Music Theatre company and teaches singing to students from the University and beyond.
Since 1982 he has been a member of the Hatfield College Senior Common Room and was President for eight years between 1996-2000 and 2006-10. From 1996 until 2011 he was also Secretary of the Town and Gown society which exists to promote closer relations between senior University staff and senior managers and officers in local government, industry and other organisations.
Clive’s other interests include the Labour Party, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, the National Trust, English Heritage, Durham Wildlife Trust etc. He is currently also Treasurer of the Mendip Society.
