Young people

  • More young people will be affected by the imprisonment of a parent than by divorce.
  • About 7% of British children will experience the imprisonment of a parent during their school years.
  • 160,000 children a year have a parent who is sent into custody.
  • 18,000 children a year are afected by their mother's imprisonment; a third of mothers who go to prison have a child under the age of 5.

NEPACS provides special 'youth room' facilities for young people aged 8 - 18 at HMP Durham, Frankland and Low Newton.  They have lots of things to do and helpful adults who can offer support.  The Youth Rooms are open from 12 - 2pm at weekends and young people can have a game of pool or play on a computer game whilst they are waiting to go in for a visit. There is also one to one support available for young people who are affected by the imprisonment of a parent or close relative. Call Savita on 07964 959959 for more details.
